My Skincare Heroes

For years, I have put myself firmly in the “adult acne” category. My face was never without a breakout, and I religiously used every anti-blemish product I could find, thinking I would eventually find something that would clear my skin up. After a spa facial where I was informed my skin was very dehydrated, it occurred to me that maybe my problem wasn’t spots, bacteria or dirt. Maybe my skin was actually a little reactive or sensitive, and these harsh products were actually causing a reaction. My skin wasn’t broken out, it was inflamed. Eureka!

I started using simpler products to just get my skin clean and moisturised. At first, I noticed how much more comfortable my face was, less painful, less tight. Then the redness and blemishes gradually lessened. Makeup went on smoother and more even. Now I’m at a stage where I only get hormonal breakouts, and I’m so much happier with my skin.

I’ve since developed a routine that works really well for me, and the following products are the absolute heroes that I rely on to keep my skin looking as healthy as possible:

When it comes to removing my makeup and cleansing, I try to avoid wipes where possible. Wipes leave a lot of dirt and product still on the skin and in your pores, so I swear by the Skin Nerd Cleanse Off Mitt. The micro fibre texture of this mitt gets every last speck of dirt and makeup off your skin, using just warm water!

I don’t like the texture of my skin if I haven’t exfoliated, and I’ve found that Superdrug’s Vitamin E Gentle Oatmeal Exfoliator is gentle enough for everyday use. A major bonus to this scrub is that it doesn’t contain microbeads, instead using oatmeal and walnut shell to slough away dead skin and impurities.

After cleansing, I use five drops of Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair. During the summer, I find the hyaluronic acid in this is enough to keep my skin moisturised, but during the drier winter months I top it off with any moisturiser from the likes of L’Occitane (or any other luxury sample I can get my hands on lol).

For my eyes, I swear by Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Supercharged Complex. It has such a silky feel and sinks in really quickly round the eye area. I also apply this to my lips every night to keep them soft and supple. I then use a bit of VeeBeautyLdn Lash &Brow Serum to nourish my lashes and brows and encourage them to grow.

Of course, I do get days when I’m feeling really congested, like after a weekend of wearing makeup, and I love a good face mask as much as the next girl! My absolute go-to fave is the Clarifying Clay Mask from VeeBeautyLDN:

I only currently have a tester size of this, but it is on my Christmas wish list, because I feel like it really works to clean out my pores and relieve any congestion or inflammation going on.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I really panicked when I learned that from the age of 25, the collagen level in your skin starts to reduce dramatically. For years, I was starving my skin of what it needed, and treating it very badly. I feel now that I have managed to reverse some of that bad treatment, so I will continue to treat the skin on my face with more care and attention as I enter my 30s.

I hope this is helpful to anyone that might have had similar issues to me, I have only recently started to appreciate my skin, and I think everyone needs to pay a little more care and attention to the biggest organ in their body ❤️

XO Ash
